Gestational Surrogacy Program

What is Surrogacy?

Gestational SurrogacySometimes, infertility treatment may require the use of a third party, such as a carrier or surrogate, to carry the pregnancy. Two types of surrogacy exist:

Traditional Surrogacy: In this form of treatment, the “surrogate mother” carries an embryo conceived with her own eggs and the sperm of a male who wants a baby. This can be done via intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). The gestational surrogate is the biological mother of the child.

Gestational Surrogacy: In this form of treatment, the gestational carrier becomes pregnant through IVF using the eggs of the intended mother (or egg donor) and the sperm of the intended father (or sperm donor). The gestational carrier is not the biological mother of the child. Gestational surrogacy is much more common than traditional surrogacy.

In either case, you select the surrogate and legal documents are signed prior to initiating the cycle in which the surrogate relinquishes all parental rights to the child(ren).

Who Would Benefit from a Gestational Carrier?

Some of the patients who would benefit form a gestational carrier include:

  • Women who have had their uterus removed.
  • Women born without a uterus or those who have a congenital abnormality of the uterus, which prevents them from carrying a pregnancy.
  • Women with recurrent unexplained pregnancy losses.
  • Women who have had multiple poor pregnancy outcomes such as second trimester losses and/or very premature births.
  • Women who have medical contraindications to carrying a pregnancy, which would put their life in danger.
  • Single men looking to have a child through an egg donor and a surrogate.
  • Gay male couples looking to have a child through an egg donor and a surrogate.

How Are Surrogates Selected?

You are the one who chooses the surrogate. She may be a family member, friend or chosen from a Surrogacy agency. The surrogates undergo an extensive screening as well as psychological assessment. They must also give informed consent for the procedure. Surrogates are also required to execute a legal contract.
