What is Egg Donation?

Who Would Benefit from Egg Donation?
Some of the patients who would benefit from egg donation include those with:
- Premature ovarian failure where menopause has occurred at a very young age.
- Diminished ovarian reserve where the eggs produced are of poor quality.
- Risk of passing on genetic disease to their children.
- Absence of the ovaries.
- Ovarian failure due to chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment.
- Multiple failed IVF cycles or lack of response to fertility drugs.
How Are Donors Selected?
Intended Parents (sometimes referred to as “IPs”) may select an egg donor that is identified (known) or non-identified. Some patients choose an egg donor who is related to them; for example a sister or a cousin in order to have some commonality in the genes that will be passed on. The vast majority of patients use a non-identified donor from an egg donor agency. You will have access to information such as the physical appearance of the egg donor, ethnicity, education, hobbies, talents and the donor’s reason for donating in order to make your selection.
Donors must then undergo a rigorous screening in the form of a complete physical exam, medical/social screening, psychological evaluation, genetic screening and infectious disease screening as required by the FDA. The donors must also give informed consent for the procedure. Egg donors are also required to execute a legal contract. All donors are informed that by giving up their eggs, they sever all legal rights and duties to rear or have contact with any resulting children.
