Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine, which has been around for more than 3,000 years. It involves the placement of very small disposable sterile needles in specific areas of the body to promote the flow of energy (Qi). It is believed that in infertility, this flow of energy is blocked and acupuncture will restore the normal balance of energy.
It is known that acupuncture can increase the release of B-endorphin and serotonin in the central nervous system. The former can lead to an increase in the release of FSH and LH, which could enhance the ovarian production of estrogen. Acupuncture also decreases the stimulation of the nervous system with relaxing of the blood vessels, which leads to an increased blood flow to both ovaries and the uterus. The increased blood flow to the ovaries can potentially lead to increased delivery of the fertility drugs to the ovaries possibly resulting in a better response to fertility medications. The increased blood flow to the uterine lining can potentially improve embryo implantation.
It is also known that acupuncture can decrease stress and anxiety, which would be extremely helpful in patients undergoing fertility treatment. It has also been demonstrated that pregnancy rates are higher if acupuncture is performed pre-and-post embryo transfer.
