Does dark chocolate really boost fertility?

There is a lot of information on the health benefits of dark chocolate, and one of the claims is that it boosts fertility. But is that really true? Does dark chocolate really boost fertility? It may be! Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, and is actually very nutritious in small quantities. Antioxidants help with the quality of both sperm and egg cells, so it’s a good choice for both men and women who are trying to conceive.

It’s important to note, though, that these benefits come specifically from dark chocolate, and that ideally means chocolate made with 70% cocoa or higher. Milk chocolate, and desserts containing chocolate aren’t the same, and trying to conceive a child shouldn’t be used as a reason to eat an extra brownie or candy bar.

Other kinds of chocolate don’t have the high level of cocoa in them, and that’s where all the antioxidants are found. Couples don’t need to eat a chocolate bar, either. They can choose nibs, powder, or even raw cacao beans. Not only will that give them plenty of antioxidant value, but it will also provide them with minerals like zinc, magnesium, and copper.

Good health in general is often associated with improved fertility, so getting plenty of vitamins and minerals can add value and make it easier to conceive. But couples should remember that balance is key, and too much dark chocolate isn’t good for them. The raw, organic forms of dark chocolate can be better choices because they contain less sugar and fewer ingredients, but they’re still high in calories.

A small square or two of dark chocolate every day (about 30-60 grams) is enough to provide potential fertility benefits without adding to weight gain or blood sugar issues for most people. As always, it’s important to listen to your doctor’s advice when trying to conceive, but most couples can add a little dark chocolate to their diet and enjoy the potential benefits without harm or risk.
