In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a highly advanced and effective fertility treatment that has helped millions of people around the world achieve their dream of parenthood. At the Fertility Institute of San Diego, led by Dr. Minoos Hosseinzadeh, we understand that the IVF process can seem complex and overwhelming. Our goal is to demystify the IVF journey, providing a clear, step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect. Here’s a breakdown of the IVF process, from initial consultation to the joyous moment of a positive pregnancy test.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Your IVF journey begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Hosseinzadeh. During this meeting, your medical history, fertility challenges, and treatment options will be discussed. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and express any concerns you may have.
Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation
Once you’re ready to proceed with IVF, the first step is ovarian stimulation. You’ll take fertility medications to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This is closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasound scans to ensure optimal response.
Step 3: Egg Retrieval
When your eggs are mature, you’ll undergo a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval. This is done under sedation, and a needle is used to aspirate the eggs from your ovaries. The procedure typically takes about 15-30 minutes.
Step 4: Fertilization
The retrieved eggs are then combined with sperm in the laboratory to achieve fertilization. A single sperm is injected directly into an egg, a process known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
Step 5: Embryo Development
The fertilized eggs, now embryos, are monitored for growth and development in the lab. Typically, embryos are cultured for 5-6 days until they reach the blastocyst stage, which is ideal for implantation.
Step 6: Embryo Transfer
The next step is the embryo transfer, where one or more embryos are placed into your uterus. This is a painless procedure performed using a thin catheter. Any remaining embryos of good quality are frozen for future use.
Step 7: The Two-Week Wait
After the embryo transfer, there’s a period of waiting, often referred to as the “two-week wait,” before taking a pregnancy test. It’s normal to feel a mix of hope and anxiety during this time.
Step 8: Pregnancy Test
Approximately 10 days after the embryo transfer, you’ll take a blood test to check for the presence of the pregnancy hormone hCG. A positive test indicates a successful implantation and pregnancy.
Step 9: Follow-Up
If the test is positive, you’ll continue to be monitored with blood tests and ultrasounds to ensure the pregnancy is progressing normally. If the test is negative, a follow-up consultation with Dr. Hosseinzadeh will help determine the next steps.
