Intended parents with surrogate on surrogacy journey

How to Cope With the Emotional Toll of Surrogacy

Coping with any kind of journey surrounding pregnancy can be an emotional time, and needing reproductive assistance to start or grow a family can add to the strain. For parents who are using a surrogate, and not carrying their baby, understanding and addressing the emotional aspect of the pregnancy is extremely important.

Make Sure to Focus on Self-Care

Even though you’re not the one physically carrying your child, you want to make sure you’re taking good care of yourself. That includes mentally and emotionally, as well as physically. Finding a good support group can help, and it doesn’t have to be a professionally operated group to be valuable.

Talking to other people who have been through or are going through the experience can also be extremely helpful, as can talking to understanding family and friends.

Eat Healthy and Exercise

Before you know it, that brand-new baby will be a toddler, and you’ll be chasing them all over the house. By starting to eat healthy and exercise now, you’ll be in a better physical and emotional space to run and play, and you’ll have fewer struggles with sleep deprivation and other stressors that come along with a new baby, too.

Journal and Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude for your journey, and everything you’ve learned along the way, can really help you cope with the emotional toll of surrogacy more easily. Journaling can be a good way to express that gratitude, because it helps you have a visual reference and get your feelings out. You can look back through the journal later, and explore the feelings and memories.

Form Connections With Others

From reconnecting with your partner to expressing empathy for any discomfort or struggles your surrogate is experiencing, staying connected to the people who are part of the process is important. The interaction can also help you feel closer to the baby you’re about to welcome.

Emotionally, surrogacy can be very hard on parents. There could be a lot of complicated feelings around not carrying the child and other aspects of the pregnancy. By honoring and working through those feelings, your surrogacy journey can be an easier one.
