Dealing with infertility can be a stressful time, and there are some holidays, events, and experiences that can stir up a lot of feelings surrounding it. Halloween, for example, can be difficult because it’s a holiday centered around children. Advertisements with children in them, costumes in the stores, and kids coming to your door for candy might be hard to handle, and it’s completely understandable that you would feel that way. You’re not alone. Here’s what to do to get through it more easily.
Remember, it’s okay to opt out of holidays and the events surrounding them if they don’t work for you. There’s no reason to stay home and hand out candy if it’s going to be too difficult. You can do something else that night, like go out with your partner or friends, or spend time with other supportive people in your life. There may be an event to attend that’s adult-based, or even seeing a movie can be a good way to relax and unwind. You don’t have to do what others are doing.
Also, don’t forget about the value of self-care. Turning off social media and avoiding the displays of kids’ costumes in the stores isn’t always easy, but it can be helpful. It’s especially important if you’re feeling overwhelmed, or having a harder time with it than you expected. It’s okay for you to leave an event, leave the store, or avoid interacting online if it’s easier for you to do that. There’s no right or wrong answer, and everyone handles their fertility journey differently.
Even though Halloween is typically focused on children, you don’t have to make that your experience. Maybe it’s time to start a new tradition with your partner, take a short trip, or find other ways to experience the holiday. Some people also choose not to acknowledge the day at all, and that’s also a perfectly fine choice. It’s important to do what works for your needs and goals, so you can focus on what matters for the long term and make your fertility journey as easy as possible.
