Foods You Should Avoid When TTC

Foods You Should Avoid When TTC

When you’re trying to conceive there are a lot of different things to think about. From lowering your stress levels to how much exercise you should be getting, the kinds of things you are doing matter.

A lot of people focus on foods that can increase fertility, as well, but it’s also important to know that there are some foods you should really avoid during this time. Here are a few of them to leave off your table during your journey.

Excess Caffeine

There’s nothing wrong with a cup of coffee for most people, but if you’re TTC you want to limit how much caffeine you’re getting on a regular basis. Too much could make your journey more difficult.

Trans fat and Heavily-Processed Foods

Fertility can also be affected by trans fat, and by too much processed food. It’s better to avoid things like bakery goods and a lot of red meat, along with processed lunch meat, hot dogs, and other, similar foods. Instead, focus on healthy fats like avocados, and more whole food options.

Sodas and High-Sugar Options

If you drink a lot of sugary soda, or even a lot of juice, switching to water could be better for your fertility. It’s also a good idea to cut back on sweets in general, and substitute options like fruit or a drizzle of honey, instead.

Fish With High Mercury Levels

Fish is a great choice for a lot of people, because it gives them healthy fats and Omega-3s. But if you’re TTC you want to be sure you’re choosing fish with low levels of mercury and eating it in moderation. Lower-mercury fish includes options like catfish, flounder, salmon, cod, tilapia, and haddock.

Overall, a plant-based, whole food diet that incorporates some lean meats, fish, and healthy fats is the way to go when TTC. While it’s not a guarantee of fertility it can help increase your pregnancy chances.
