June is World Infertility Awareness Month

World Infertility Awareness Month is held every year in June, and is recognized by the World Health Organization for its importance. Infertility is a public health issue all over the world, and raising awareness of it can help more couples understand that they aren’t alone in their journey to start or grow their family.

Additionally, many people around the globe who are dealing with infertility may not realize that there is help available to them. Finding education, information, and resources is extremely important for any couple trying to have children.

If couples have been trying to conceive for more than a year without success, or if they’re over the age of 35 and want to conceive, working with a doctor is the right choice. That can help identify infertility problems early, and treat those problems more successfully. In some cases, that will lead to the couple being able to conceive. In other cases, IVF may help them start or grow their family.

Another important issue brought to light through World Infertility Awareness Month is that infertility isn’t just about women. Men can also have fertility issues, but that’s not talked about as much. That can lead men to avoid seeking treatment or talking about it with their doctors, because they feel uncomfortable or simply don’t realize that there are options available to them.

Over one million couples in the US struggle to conceive naturally, and with all the strides that have been made in fertility treatments, many of those couples have more hope than ever before. Insurance companies are starting to cover IVF and other treatments in some states, and it’s important that couples are given the information they need to make fertility decisions for themselves.

For couples that aren’t successful in conceiving, it can feel very personal and isolating. But issues with fertility aren’t rare, and many couples are dealing with the same frustrations and facing the same fears. Many infertility causes can be treated and overcome, with the right doctor.

Raising awareness of the significance of infertility around the world, and the treatments that are available, can help more couples learn about the issue and reach out for the help they need to have families.
